The Impact of Kava Bans

Aloha everyone! I hope all of you are doing well! I have been extremely busy with the farm and with travel and business (as usual!), but I have also been sure to find time to relax and enjoy some time on this ever-beautiful island with my family (and our delicious kava, of course!). I have been thinking quite a bit on a certain subject recently and I just wanted to share my thoughts with all of your. This is a problem that really causes distress and poverty for millions of people, and its not something that Americans or Europeans are necessarily made aware of very often. This is the problem...

Kava Recipes

Aloha! A few months ago I posted about a kava themed dinner party that I attended! We were treated to amazing delicacies such as kava-seared tuna and kava ice cream. So far, I haven’t been able to persuade my friend to give me those particular recipes to post up here for you all, but that dinner made me think that it might be nice to share some of my personal favorite kava recipes, as well as some of the great kava drink recipes we have up on our website! Since it is so hard to obtain fresh kava root outside of the areas where the plant grows, I won’t post any recipes that use...

A Little Hawaiian History…

Aloha! I’ve been reading a lot about kava in the news lately, and I’ve noticed a trend where journalists demonize kava as a “vice.” It is true that there are many who fall into the trap of looking to kava as a panacea. Others, like myself and my family and friends, simply enjoy it was a way to relax at the end of a long day.  In any case, kava is a very heady brew that one must respect and it should not be taken lightly. Hawaii is home to the world’s finest kava, as well as to some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches, coral reefs, lagoons, lush tropical...

Spin The Kava!

Aloha! I hope that everyone out there had a happy Valentine’s Day. Forgive the belated nature of my well wishes to you. I’ve been so busy traveling and also with the farm, I am surprised that I have any time to write, much less a social life. Over the years, I never celebrated Valentine’s Day in the traditional, romantic way as most people do; it is my mother’s birthday. That’s why the day has always been significant and special to me. However, this year’s Valentine’s Day was indeed a very memorable occasion for other reasons. All of my single...

Kava – It’s Not Just For Drinking Anymore!

Aloha! I recently went to a friend’s dinner party that had an all-kava theme. As you can imagine, it was an amazing evening filled with relaxed conversation, good company, laughter; and kava, of course! For most people, using kava for anything other than drinking is unimaginable. My friend who hosted the party is a chef who recently traveled the Pacific Islands, trying out local specialties made with kava and then came home to Hawaii and recreated some of the kava-based dishes she had sampled in her travels. They were an amazing treat! Kava-seared tuna and kava ice cream – can...

Life in Balance

Aloha! It was interesting to read a recent news report in the Fiji Daily Post on a research study proclaiming Fijian women consume more kava than men. This research also made the claim that kava brings overall “laziness to the community.” The article mentioned the research being conducted in two “major yaqona consuming villages,” although it did not name them. Yoqona is what the national kava brew is called in Fiji. The article was critical of this research and posed the questions: “[How] does one define a ‘major yaqona consuming village’? Does it...
