“GROG” vs. “FIRE WATER”

Aloha! I love reading, as I’m sure many of you have already discovered by now. Recently I stumbled across writer Joel Gibson’s very vivid and entertaining account of a trip he took to the South Pacific entitled “Just One More Cup of Kava” in the travel section of The Age, a news website out of Australia, where kava is a schedule IV drug, legal to possess and sell, but  illegal to import without a special license. Gibson writes, “Three hours into our 16-hour odyssey on a government tub called Tovuto, I get my first taste of Fijian hospitality. Leaving the crowd...

Organic Goodness: Chocolate & Kava

Aloha! I recently discovered an interesting candy maker, specifically a chocolatier – someone whose professional focus is making handmade, specialty chocolate; Would that make me a “Kavatier” then? Hehe! What caught my eye about this particular chocolatier from Idaho (a state located in the northern Rocky Mountain region of the mainland), is that she developed a chocolate made with kava – in Idaho of all places! But now, with existing kava kava supplies drying up, Yirrkala Community Council coordinator Adrian Rota said crime had increased in the dry Arnhem Land community. “People who have drunk kava in the past are drinking alcohol, and it’s...

More Evidence Against Liver Toxicity!

At the start of 2002, prospects were bright for Hawai’i’s kava (‘awa) producers. During the previous decade, the consumer base for kava had expanded beyond drinkers of the traditional water-based kava beverage to include the much larger nutritional supplement market. Kava capsules were prescribed in Europe to treat anxiety and insomnia. By year’s end, the kava industry had collapsed. At least 68 suspected cases of kava-linked liver toxicity had been reported, including nine liver failures that resulted in six liver transplants and three deaths. Countries in Europe,...

SEIZE THE DAY!

Aloha! After I posted to my blog a couple weeks ago about “Passion and the Butterfly Effect“ I made a connection to one of my favorite athletes who I’ve talked about before: Ruben Wiki of the New Zealand Warriors. Ruben, who wears a cloth arm band with the phrase “Carpe Diem!” emblazoned on it, is a great contemporary example of someone living life actively. “Carpe Diem!” Seize the day! Now, Ruben Wiki is a man who knows how to grab life by the horns and wrestle it until it succumbs to his will; his passion– there it is again! That word!...
