Those who live in the
mainland United States may not be familiar with Vanuatu.
For those who don't know about this beautiful island
nation, Vanuatu is comprised of 83 separate islands in
the Southwestern Pacific ocean. Like most of the
Pacific's island nations, Vanuatu is blessed with a warm
tropical climate that happens to be perfect for growing
kava.
Kava has a long history in Vanuatu, and its use can be
radically different from island to island. For many of
the islands, kava is considered a sexually charged
drink, and women are forbidden from drinking it. On the
island of Malekula, kava is associated with a cult of
death. (Of course, here in Hawaii, we encourage everyone
to drink kava!)
In parts of Vanuatu, it is customary to spill a mouthful
of kava as a way of offering some to one's ancestors.
This practice is called tamafa, and it's roughly
equivalent to giving a toast. New Caledonia (part of
Vanuatu) is the home of the kava bar, which originated
as a simple gathering spot called a nakamal. This is
where the men of the village would traditionally consume
kava in the evenings.
Nowadays, anyone can enjoy the gently relaxing effects
of the kava kava plant in their own home. At Kona Kava
Farm, we use certified organic farming methods to grow
the potent Mahakea strain of kava kava. Our farm is
family-run, and we are in this business because we love
it. We love the land, the kava plant, and we want to
share it with everyone we can.
To that end, we offer plenty of ways to put a little
kava in your life. Try our drinks mixes or our powdered
root if you'd like to drink your kava. We also have
liquigels that contain 84 percent kavalactone. It comes
as no surprise that these are one of our most popular
products! To try the soothing effects of kava kava
yourself, just pick the product that best fits your
lifestyle and place your order. |
