Can I Keep My Kava Drinks Refrigerated?Jesse asked: Hi I was just wondering if i can make up large batches of the dried root and either refrigerate or freeze it if so how long will it remain effective? It would be great if i can make up say a weeks supply at one time as it will save a great deal of time and cleanup.

Makaira says: Yes, you can make up large batches of extractions and refrigerate it for use later. (We have never experimented with freezing the root, so I can’t answer that question for you, sorry.) But, on far more than one occasion, we have kept water-based extractions of kava root for two weeks in the back corner of the fridge (it is not an easy task to have an extraction sit for that long without wanting to enjoy it!), and the only thing that happens is that the oil starts to separate from the water. This is harmless, and it simply requires a stir or two. Since kavalactone (the active ingredient in the extraction) has a shelf life of 2 years, you can rest assured that your extraction will not lose potency over that minute amount of time. Much joy to you!

  1. Hi Robert!

100g of powdered kava is a lot – I would recommend starting with about half of that. You can make tea with about 1/4 of a liter of cold water using the traditional extraction methods discussed on our site, or you can mix the powder with any type of milk/nut milk and create various delicious kava beverages. Let me know if you need any more assistance in preparing your kava!

  2. Thanks very much. I would like to know how to mix 100g of powder kava with how much litres of water?

  3. I think big organizations have a tendancy of trying to scare people away from natural products. The kind of things they can’t patent and make there own, things they can’t profit from that may take away from products that they do.

…Even if it means harming people with synthetics and hiding things that are natural.

  4. We try our best, mostly because we adore this ancient plant and will never forget that the only reason we’ve been able to bring it to so many lovely people around the world is because of our customers…just like you, who take the time to explore more than the mainstream herbal supplements that are peddled to all of us every day, sometimes completely unsuspectingly.

It’s interesting to me that the pharmaceutical companies have been trying so hard to discredit this safe and ancient plant, mostly, IMHO, because Kava has proven to be so safe and so effective, without all of the nasty side-effects of synthetic, manufactured products that these companies call “medications”.

I’m not saying that I feel all medications are bad, I just know that we, as an independent, herbal supplement-based, “grass roots farm” with a passion for what we do, are concerned far more about sharing this plant with as many as possible, hoping that kind folks like you get to discover the many benefits that ‘awa has to offer, in all its forms, than making a dollar at any cost.

Anyway, thanks for the kind comments (sorry about the diatribe!). I’m always here, interested to respond to any questions that any of our customers might have, partly because every single spark we send out has the potential to ignite a Great Fire, and partly because I enjoy it so much! Aloha no, Makaira

  5. Thank you for responding back, this is wonderful knowing that a company has great customer service and awesome products.

    Thank you.

  6. Adam, I’m not actually quite sure what you’re asking, I’m sorry. Every person is different, and every body reacts differently to different herbal supplements (as well as medications), so there’s no way to tell, individually, whether someone will find an effect pleasurable, and when another may not.

That being said, we, of course, craft our elixirs to be a pleasant way to enjoy the many benefits of Kava, but to promise that our Kava Elixirs are a one-size fits-all herbal supplement, wouldn’t be possible. This is also why we offer so many different kinds of Kava products; if one doesn’t work for you, then there are plenty of others to choose from! Hope this helps. Aloha no, Makaira

  7. Hello! I was just wondering if your kava elixirs have a good effect? Please respond back, Thank you!
